It's School Librarian Appreciation Day! Ellis Jr./Sr. High School is proud to recognize an outstanding educator and district librarian: Mrs. Shelly Hensley! We are thrilled to have her experience, knowledge, and expertise as part of our school community. Mrs. Hensley has a busy schedule, teaching 7th-grade history while also serving as our full-time district librarian, traveling between three schools each day. Not a day goes by without Mrs. Hensley bringing a smile with her. She is optimistic, enthusiastic, and, above all, kind to everyone. She has served the Ellis community and schools for many years, and her commitment and dedication to our students and the families of Ellis make us proud!
In addition to her teaching and librarian roles, she has coached volleyball and sponsored many organizations in the past. Mrs. Hensley has always been a strong supporter of our Railroader athletics, especially following her son, Dalton, and her daughter, Bailey, throughout their high school years. We truly appreciate her commitment both inside and outside the classroom. As a librarian, Mrs. Hensley is a friend and trusted resource to both students and faculty. She is always willing to roll up her sleeves to help where needed or to offer an encouraging word. We are inspired by how many students feel comfortable asking for book suggestions and by the numerous comments about her kindness. Mrs. Hensley knows what the kids enjoy and does her best to maintain a great selection of books. Reading is essential, and having her at the helm of our library is wonderful for our schools.
Fun facts about Mrs. Hensley include her love for the outdoors. She enjoys hunting, fishing, and walking. She is also a proud grandmother to three beautiful granddaughters, and her son is getting married this fall. A bonus? She's a fan of 80s rock — you have to love an 80s girl! We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated librarian and teacher like Mrs. Hensley. She makes a difference every day and is valued in our community and at our school. We are honored to celebrate her contributions as part of our Railroader family. Thank you, Mrs. Hensley!

Ellis Jr./Sr. High School is proud to recognize an outstanding educator: Mrs. Nicole Carroll! We are thrilled to have her experience, knowledge, and expertise as part of our school community. Mrs. Carroll has a busy schedule, teaching the Career and Financial Planning class to seniors while also serving as our full-time counselor for grades 7-12. Each day, she brings positivity, creativity, and empathy to our school environment.
In addition to her teaching and counseling roles, Mrs. Carroll is the advisor for KAY (Kansas Association for Youth), which provides numerous leadership and learning opportunities for our students. KAY also organizes events like Snowball and various community service projects throughout the year. Furthermore, she has coached in the past and enjoys watching her sons and husband play golf. You can often find her helping out at sporting events, whether running the clock or keeping score. We truly appreciate her commitment both inside and outside the classroom.
As a counselor, Mrs. Carroll is a friend to all—students and faculty alike. She is always willing to lend a hand to colleagues and students, and her door is always open. Those who enter are greeted with a smile and a “How can I help?” attitude. She serves as a lifelong support system for our seniors, assisting with graduation and scholarship applications. Many students have expressed how much she genuinely cares about their well-being and success, and this sentiment resonates throughout our school. Mrs. Carroll makes a difference every day.
Another fun fact about Mrs. Carroll is that her family runs The Frozen Frog, a snow cone business that operates during the summer. She is also a fan of Bon Jovi and has even attended one of their concerts. She truly embodies the spirit of an '80s girl at heart! We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated counselor and teacher like Mrs. Carroll. She is valued in our community and at our school, and we are honored to celebrate her contributions as part of our Railroader family. Thank you, Mrs. Carroll!

This week, the EHS Journalism staff is distributing "You’re in the Book" flyers to all students at Ellis Jr./Sr. High School who have not yet purchased a 2024-25 Railroader Yearbook. The cost of a yearbook is $50. The EHS Journalism team works hard each year to create this memorable publication. This is the second year that the Railroader Yearbook will include grades 7-12, featuring pictures and memories from both high school and junior high.
Without the generosity of our students' families, it would be difficult to fund the yearbook, and this valuable tradition could come to an end. Sales are crucial for supporting this publication and maintaining this important class within our schools. Your purchase helps keep the yearbook alive for years to come. With the rise of online photos and social media, students and parents often overlook the value of a physical yearbook. Ensure your memories last a lifetime—purchase your Railroader Yearbook today! Students who buy a yearbook will be invited to the “Signing Celebration” at the beginning of the school year, where they can sign each other’s yearbooks, reviving a cherished tradition.
The link to purchase a yearbook online can be found here: https://www.jostens.com/apps/store/customer/1070972/Ellis-High-School. If you have any questions or want to confirm whether you have already purchased a yearbook, please contact the school office at 785-726-3151.
Thank you for supporting our work - Ellis High School Journalism!
