Ellis Jr./Sr. High School is proud to recognize our amazing teachers and staff! This week, we would like to highlight Mr. Matt Davenport. He is a first-year teacher in our district, and we are excited to have him on board! Mr. Davenport brings a wealth of knowledge and outstanding qualities to our school as a social studies and math teacher. He has developed a great rapport with his students and makes a significant impact in the classroom. In addition to being an excellent teacher, Mr. Davenport is also the assistant girls' basketball coach and the junior high girls' basketball coach. He has initiated the Chess Club at our school, which has attracted 43 members! Fun fact: his favorite music group is Queen. He can never claim, "I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me," because we are lucky to have Mr. Davenport, and he is truly valued in our community. We are honored to celebrate his contributions as part of our Railroader family. Thank you, Mr. Davenport!

Sub-State Basketball is fast approaching. There are multiple changes to the original school calendar as we experienced two changes after the start of the school year. The first is that KSHSAA member schools approved a new post-season format that will be used for the first time this year. This format expands sub-state regions, adding additional schools to the sub-state. However, it also affords two schools the opportunity to earn births to the state tournament as opposed to one. The second change is that we are now classified as a 1A-Division 1 school, different from the 2A classification we have competed in for many years. Classifications need to play games on different dates in order to assign registered officials to all of the post-season games. Sub-state brackets will be determined on Wednesday, February 19. Quarterfinal games will be hosted by the higher seeded teams on Monday, February 24 (Girls) and Tuesday, February 25 (Boys). Should teams advance, the sub-state semifinals will be played on Saturday, March 1 (Girls) and Monday, March 3 (Boys). Those games will also be hosted by the higher seeded team. Sub-state finals will be hosted at the Colby Event Center on Friday, March 7 (Girls) and Saturday, March 8 (Boys). We wish our Railer teams the best of luck as they conclude their regular season and vie for a trip to the state tournament!

This weekend, the Lady Railers made history, competing in the first girls' Super Regional in KSHSAA history and in the new 321A-only classification. Half of the eligible teams in the state compete at one of two regional sites. The top 8 placers continue to state in Hays on Feb. 28-March 1.
The field of teams was extremely tough in the West Regional, hosting the top 6 teams in the state and 7 of the top 10. The Lady Railers performed outstandingly.
105# Piper McClung (sophomore) competed in a bracket with 5 of the top 6 in the state. She punched her ticket to state.
110# Kia Mader (junior), ranked 6 going into regionals, went 5-1. She also had 5 of the top 6 in her bracket. With a 3rd place finish she punched her ticket to state.
The third placer punching her ticket to state wrestled in a bracket with the top 3 girls in the state. Hannah James (freshman) looked amazing as she wrestled her way into the top 7 qualifiers for state from this regional.
It's an exciting time for the Lady Railers as they seem to be peaking at the right time. Watch for posted brackets and information about the state tournament.
