This time of year always reminds me of growing up in Ellis. Looking forward to Thanksgiving. Jumping in piles of brown leaves that my siblings had just raked up. Feeling excited for the start of winter sports and my chance to cheer on the Railers from the stands. Thinking back on those days, I still remember the amazing pep band and a student section that made our school and community proud.
Whoever first said, “The more things change, the more they stay the same,” was right.
Of course, I’ll be the first to admit that these days I’m more likely to be found admiring the autumn leaves than jumping in them — and admitting that the lead-up to Thanksgiving involves more responsibilities than it did back then. But I am still excited for winter sports to start because it’s another season for our high school students and fans to experience some of the most enduring traditions we share.
We have great kids in our schools, and I always love the way they show their Railer pride. I can’t wait to see them making posters, leading cheers and bringing a positive spirit every time people gather for a sporting event. Part of this is also thanks to our athletic director, Derek Schoenthaler, who was recently named KSHSAA AD of the Week. We are fortunate to have someone in this role who consistently does what is good and fair for all kids. I hope you'll offer your congratulations the next time you see him!
I’m also thrilled to announce that the long-awaited Ellis School District daycare center will open by the start of the next school year. This was made possible through private donations, fundraising and a recent decision by our school board to commit the funds needed to start building. In addition to providing a much-needed service to families, the center will support student enrollment goals, as well as the recruitment and retention of teachers and staff. Look for more information about this project in early 2026.
Here are a few other school district highlights from the last few weeks:
· We have been recognized for student success by the Kansans Can Star Recognition Program. Congratulations to our students, educators and families for earning a Bronze Award in three categories: Academically Prepared for Postsecondary, Graduation and Postsecondary Effectiveness.
· As host, Ellis proudly welcomed the 1A and 2A cross country regional meets on October 25th. A big thank you goes to the Ellis Golf Course for their hospitality and to all the community members who came out to support our student athletes. During the meet, six of our eight runners earned personal records! Kudos also to Avery Boydston, 1A regional cross country champion, and 1A regional runner-up Taryn Boydston. Avery and Taryn competed at the state meet on Nov. 1. Avery placed 1st and Taryn runner up! We couldn’t be prouder.
· Shoutout to our volleyball players...Leah Reed was selected to play in the Northwest Kansas All-Star Volleyball Match at the Colby Event Center on Nov. 16. Sienna Schmidt recorded 500 digs over two seasons, and Taylor Kohl notched 500 assists in a single season. Great job, girls!
Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who voted in the Nov. 4 election, as well as each person who was willing to run for school board. Win or lose, a great school district depends on great people stepping forward to lead. We are lucky to have that in Ellis.
I look forward to working with our new board as they join our other three Ellis Board of Education members to lead our district in 2026 and beyond. One of the board’s most important tasks ahead will be hiring a new superintendent and creating a smooth transition. While I prepare for my retirement in June, I look forward to doing all I can to create as much continuity as possible for our students, staff, families and community.
In closing, I invite you in the coming weeks to reflect on the simple things that matter most. As for me, I am ever grateful for the love of my family, my Ellis roots — and for your heartfelt support of the students and staff who make up Ellis School District. Happy Thanksgiving!
Janice Wilson, Superintendent
