December

Happy December! I’m always a bit amazed by how quickly we get from the first day of school to winter break. And with the learning activities, winter sports competitions, music programs and celebrations planned, I’m sure the next week will zip right by, as well.

Looking back over the last few weeks, there is no shortage of good news to share! I must begin with the KAYS Veterans Day program, one of my favorite things in the entire year. Once again, this event brought together students, staff and the community as a wonderful tribute to the men and women who have served our country. Our distinguished guests were treated to patriotic music by our students — lovely singing by all Washington Grade School students, impressive pieces by the junior/senior high band and a wonderful performance by the EHS guitar club.  Year after year, this event showcases the best of our community and the best of our schools. It is a real point of pride for everyone.

Here are some other recent highlights from our schools…

·     Wrestling and basketball have begun, and our athletes have been working hard to prepare for a great season. Be sure to check the calendar on our website to fill the bleachers with support all season long.

·      On Nov. 25, 15 EHS seniors and nine juniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. Congratulations to each of these students for earning a minimum GPA of 3.5, demonstrating leadership in seven school and/or community organizations, completing 40 hours of community service and receiving a positive character evaluation by EHS teachers. Thanks to Maria Mick for her work to encourage students to pursue this impressive accomplishment and celebrate their success.

·      EHS sophomores experienced RealityU on at Thomas More Prep-Marian. This financial literacy program gives students a hands-on look at the decisions that change their financial future, from education and careers to family decisions. Thanks to 7-12 counselor Nicole Carroll and parent volunteers Brandon and Jana Cromer, who helped make it a success.

·      The EHS cheerleaders took home third place in 1A at the statewide Game Day championship event in Topeka over Thanksgiving break. Thanks to everyone who turned out for a spirited sendoff that Saturday morning!]

·      Congratulations are in order for these EHS football players who earned All-District honors: Carson Schartz, First Team Linebacker, Second Team Running Back and Honorable Mention Kick Returner; Aiden Aschenbrenner, Second Team Kicker; Brody Fischer, Honorable Mention Offensive Line and Honorable Mention Defensive Line; Ben Byers, Honorable Mention Receiver; and Baylor Born, Honorable Mention Defensive Back.

·       EHS Student Council sponsored a community blood drive. Thanks to everyone who took the time to make a life-saving donation.

As the holiday season marks the end of 2025, I hope you will join me in reflecting on the many gifts we enjoy. Whether large or small, personal or professional, there is always something to appreciate. Each of us also has the power to be that gift for someone else. Support an angel tree, deliver a meal, make time for a conversation, send a note of encouragement, share a smile with a stranger. Together, we can make this season special for everyone and begin 2026 with a sweet note of connection and hope.
