As we wrap up the first quarter, I’m reminded how fortunate we are to have such a supportive community in Ellis. Our staff, families, and patrons all play an important role in helping our students succeed, and it’s great to see that work paying off.
One of the highlights this fall has been our beginning-of-year FastBridge assessments which teachers use to get a better feel for student skill sets. Results show that 76% of our students district-wide are proficient in reading and 73% are proficient in math, both above the national average of 60%. We saw very similar results on last year’s state assessments with over 85% of our students performing at grade level in both ELA and Math, which far exceeded the state-wide average of 72%. These results reflect the hard work of our teachers and staff, along with the learning and support that continue at home throughout the summer!
A few other highlights from the past month:
Homecoming: Despite a little rain, Homecoming week at the beginning of the month was a success! From window decorating to the parade, pep rally, and Friday night football, it was great to see our students and community come together for one of our most attended events in years. Congratulations to Colton Metzler and Piper McClung on being crowned EHS Homecoming King and Queen!
Reading Growth: Our teachers have been working to expand reading support across all grade levels through our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), giving students additional time and targeted instruction in the skills they need most. This approach helps us better meet individual student needs, support academic growth, and advance our district’s strategic plan.
Railer Rockstars: Our sixth-grade ambassadors at Washington Grade School have started a new program – Railer Rockstars – to recognize students who demonstrate hard work, positive attitudes, and school pride. Thanks to Emily Burd and Courtney Maska for helping make this program possible!
As we move into the second quarter, I want to thank our Board of Education for its continued leadership and commitment to our district’s priorities. I also want to recognize the Board members that joined us this year and are quickly approaching one year of service. Bailey Gottschalk, Nick Keller, Jenny Schartz, and Craig Seibel have done a great job of learning the issues, asking thoughtful questions, and leading with integrity throughout the year. Their efforts – and that of the entire Board – have kept us focused on what matters most: our students and making the best use of the resources our community entrusts to us.
The 2026-2027 school year is off to a great start! I hope everyone enjoys the beautiful fall weather and has a fun and safe Halloween. Thank you for everything you do to support our schools. If you see me out and about, stop and say hello. I always enjoy visiting about our schools and our community!
