Congrats to Derek Schoenthaler, Activities Director at Ellis Jr/Sr High School, on being named the KIAAA Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association AD of the Week!
Schoenthaler is in his 12th year as an athletic director, including six years at Ellinwood and now six at his hometown of Ellis. After graduating from Ellis High School in 2000, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in 2004, where he worked in the athletic department as a student strength and conditioning coach and in event management. He later earned two master’s degrees from Wichita State University, completing internships with Wichita Public Schools under Bill Faflick and at Maize USD 266 under Marc Haught.
Before becoming an AD, Schoenthaler began his teaching and coaching career at Maize, but the opportunity to return home and watch his own kids compete as Railroaders drew him back to Ellis. His leadership philosophy centers around competition within oneself, attention to detail, and setting high expectations.
Schoenthaler defines leadership as being involved in all facets of a program and showing appreciation for coaches, fans, and event workers. He values connecting high school athletes with younger students to build school pride and mentorship. “I get to help students find a place to express their passions and find shared experiences that help foster lifelong friendships and memories,” he says. “I essentially get to watch them do what they love. How cool is that?”
A 2017 Certified Athletic Administrator, Schoenthaler is currently pursuing his Certified Master Athletic Administrator endorsement. He was named District 1 AD of the Year in 2021, has been recognized three times as AD of the Year by Fort Hays State University Intramurals, and has hosted numerous postseason events. He is also helping lead efforts to develop new track and field and football facilities for Ellis.
Derek and his wife, Lyndsae, have three children—Josey (8th grade), Canon (4th grade), and Luke (Kindergarten). His parents, brother, and extended family all reside in Ellis.
Join us in recognizing Derek Schoenthaler for his outstanding leadership and impact on Kansas high school activities! 👏
